Meet Belfry, our resident big brown bat who came to Earthplace in 2023 after being found with an injured wing and tail. Because he can’t fully extend his tail, he’s unable to fly—and Earthplace has become his permanent home.

Belfry spends most of the day doing what nocturnal animals do best: sleeping. And he does it with style. Visitors can admire the many sleeping positions he cycles through—tucked, curled, stretched, and the occasional upside-down sprawl.

But when Belfry is awake? He has opinions. He earned his name from all the times he yelled at his keepers in his early days with us. He’s also a huge foodie, and the quickest way to his heart is through mealtime. Belfry makes a happy little chittering sound when he knows food is coming, which is one of the many reasons he’s such a memorable part of our Animal Hall.
