Welcome to the Animal Hall Garden! Protected from deer and other challenges, this garden allows us to grow food for the animals, cultivate flowers for programs, and propagate native plants for conservation.
The animals get leafy greens like lettuce and chicory, or veggies like peppers and corn. Earthplace staff use the flowers for drying, dyeing, pressing, and bouquet-making. And of course, native plants end up in our gardens and deer exclosures to promote biodiversity and support the food web of our forest.
You might see some nibbled leaves here and there. We encourage the nibblings of caterpillars and other insects, letting our garden remain eco-friendly. Without the use of pesticides, this garden flourishes with butterflies, bees, beetles, ants, moths, and other pollinators.
If it’s winter, you’ll notice we allow many seedheads to remain. They feed the birds! Dead stalks also provide habitat for some of the garden’s smallest residents. This is a thriving, multi-purpose ecological area, even when it’s too cold for plants to grow.
