Animal Hall Volunteer Orientation
The Animal Hall and Connecticut Birds of Prey exhibit house more than thirty live animals and provide the Earthplace community with educational animal programs and experiences focused on natural history, care, and appreciation. Our collection contains species representing many animal groups including wildlife of Connecticut, domesticated species, and exotic species from around the world. Animals from our collection play a vital role in many of Earthplace’s programs including school and outreach programs, birthday parties, after-school programs, nursery school, and summer camp.
Animal Hall Volunteer Orientation
Date: June 12th, 2013
Time: 6pm-8pm
Location: Earthplace, The Nature Discovery Center
Fee: $0.00
Interested in working with animals? We are currently looking for summer volunteers (over the age of 16) to assist with animal care in the Animal Hall at Earthplace. The first Animal Hall Volunteer Orientation is being held on Wednesday, June 12th, from 6pm-8pm. Orientation is intended to explain what volunteering in the Animal Hall is all about. We’ll give you a tour, show what a typical volunteer shift looks like and answer any questions you might have. Attending orientation does not imply a commitment for future volunteering-we want this to be an opportunity for you to decide if this is a good fit.
Please note, that if you want to volunteer within the Animal Hall, you must attend an orientation. The next orientation will be held in the early fall. Please contact either of the following Animal Hall staff members by June 7th to RSVP for this orientation date. If you are interested in volunteering in the Animal Hall and the orientation date does not work for you, please contact either staff member and we will try and work out an alternative date.

Volunteer Opportunities
We can always use some good help! There are many opportunities to assist with different ongoing and special activities:
• Museum - creating signs and displays, helping with family programs
• Trails and grounds maintenance - clearing trails, removing invasive plants, weeding our gardens
• Publicity - writing press releases, putting up signs and posters
• Caring for animals
• Collecting and testing water samples through Harbor Watch - training sessions are held each spring and fall
• Day of event assistance - The Earthplace staff and Board of Directors appreciate help with our special public events and fundraisers
Participants who volunteer with HW include diverse dedicated individuals of all ages, high school and college students as well as adults. Volunteers may conduct onsite testing or laboratory analysis, pilot or man our research vessels, process the collected water quality data or act as mentors.
